I downloaded the latest verison of PortableApps Platform, but I can't install it because the installer won't ask me where to install it to. After selecting a language, it goes straight to the terms and after that, ATTEMPTS to install. Please help!
Why is the installer not asking me where to install to?
Start.exe - What is it? Necessary? My PA is working without it.
Hi everyone. I've known about portable apps for a long time, but I'm just starting to use them. (They're great!) If my questions seem dumb or naive, please forgive them. I semi-retired from sofware engineering 15 yrs ago (after 30 years professional development), and I have some rust, but the bulb it still medium bright.
I'm here at the moment because I've been searching for several hours about this file called Start.exe which is mentions in dozens of posts, implying that it's a critical file needed by portable apps, especially if you want to transfer your pa setup to another computer or flash drive. The problem is that I'm running Windows 10, and I find no file Start.exe anywhere on my system -- not in the root of where pa is, nor in any other place.
Is it always necessary? Is there some alternate file if you are using the pa platform?
(I find it hard to believe that Start.exe is always necessary, since I'm running the pa platform on my system without problems and Start.exe doesn't exist on my system.)
Am I missing something about this? If anyone can shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Tom
P.S. Is there a forum for suggestions? (I'm not criticizing the site, but websites evolve in stages, and sometimes become unintentionally confusing for new users, and I'd like to give some feedback on a few things that could be easily remedied [I know, in software development, nothing is easily remedied], but in at least one or two cases, I'm talking about thinks as simple as text changes in menu items.)

Installer LOOP
Hello, I try and install PortableApps and it just goes to install loop, which means that I walk in the loop, and do not get any "start program" at all, it will only install and set up, no matter how I try, though it is built on my USB device or if it is on my computer. There are some who feel like and try and help me? haha?

Sudden Platform Problem
Hi all,
I've been using PortableApps on a portable hard drive (USB connected) for years and never had a problem before. Today, I restarted my PC and clicked my PortableApps 'start' shortcut to find that my usual PortableApps menu had turned flat green with lots of 'lblAppButton02, lblAppButton02, and so on instead of my app entries.
I tried to (re)install the latest version but the install fails with:
Error opening file for writing:
G:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\PortableAppsPlatform.exe
Click abort to stop ..... etc.
Having read various past forum threads, I checked my drive with chkdsk and Crystal Disk Info (all good apparently), unmounted and remounted the drive, etc., tried to reinstall as Admin, but to no avail.
I can go directly to my apps and start them without any apparent problem - everything else seems to work fine - but I can't get past this platform/menu issue. Does anybody have any idea what this sudden problem might be?
Thanks in advance - Bob Yorke

Platform folder Music, etc. not pointing to redirected ones
Hello,
The problem:
PortableApps created a folder Documents with subfolders Videos, Music, Pictures in C:\Users\MyName\, but those do not point to the correct, redirected versions of the personal system folders.
The context:
I installed PortableApps in C:\Users\Thierry\ on a Win 10, 64 bit system.
For convenience, I had moved my personal folders (Music, Videos, ...) to another drive, using the buitl-in tool in Windows to redirect the "shortcuts".
Also, since the Documents folder is often "polluted" with stuff from applications rather than my own organized documents, I moved that one to C:\Users\Thierry\AppDocs and I use a folder called Docs for my documents.
I understand I do not use Windows personal folders as most of people, but I'm surprised of the behaviour of PortableApps since I assume Windows updated the environment variables related to these folders.
Is this is a bug? Can I apply a workaround to manually set where these folders should be and the icon point to?
Many thanks!
Thierry

Platform takes long time to load
Is it normal for the platform to take about 20-30 seconds to load each time? The UI comes right up, but it appears to be scanning for the apps for about 20-30 seconds.
I have one of the fastest USB drives out there and am loading it on a USB 3.0 port, so I really don't think the issues with with the storage device. Is this normal?

If I want to copy them to my desktop, do I simply copy and paste the "D:\PortableApps" folder ?
Thank you.

Platform Checks for New Apps Every Log On
I use the PortableApps.com Platform mainly to use fonts without Administrator privileges, as well as a few minor games. As this is the only use for me, I have no use for getting new apps most of the time. However, the Platform asks me about new apps every startup. Is there any way to disable the process and only ask about new apps when I tell it to?
Thanks

Running PortableApps.com Platform from a Read-Only drive
I am thinking of switching to the Platform proper. Currently, I download and install each PortableApps.com application individually. I am looking to solve two wishes by switching to the full platform.
First, I wish to install to a USB flash drive and then run applications on other computers with that flash drive set to read-only. It's okay if a few applications don't work like this, but does anyone have experience trying this? Does it just give too many issues in day-to-day usage? Currently, I have two sets of apps, one I use on my own system, installed to the hard drive, and another on a flash drive which I use on untrusted systems. (Side question: Does the read-only switch on a flash drive prevent writes via hardware, or is it just a flag to be read by the OS and then the OS mounts the drive as read-only?)
Second minor wish, I want to have file associations on the go. I understand the official solution to this is being worked on. The links I found in the forums to previous unofficial solutions are all dead links now. And it is my understanding those will not work on Windows 8 and newer. Xenon is what I have used for the last year, but sometimes an application just doesn't work for you, if you know what I mean. Mostly I need to associate archives like .ZIP files, and starting 7-Zip versus starting Xenon is the same amount of work. It's possible I missed a thread. If there's something obvious I should read, please let me know. Thanks.

Adding Other Apps not working
The instruction here is not working: http://portableapps.com/support/platform#addingotherapps
See screenshot here: http://imgur.com/a/6ZmVp -> apps are where they are supposed to be, as instructed above, but how ever much I select "Apps | Refresh App Icons", the apps do not appear. Restarting PortableApps and booting don't help either.
Funnily, Greenshot is actually a paf version (dated 22 Nov 2016), but still not appear in the menu. PortableApps is whatever is the newest downloadable today.
Cleaner, FormatFactory and Keepass are all also portable apps, even if not in PAF format.
Could you please either fix the menu or update the instruction?
The system is Windows 10 64-bit.

One Drive 4 Business illegal file name
I recently installed Portable apps to my DropBox folder. This has worked well. However, I then decided that this was a waste of space that I was paying for and there is lots of space in my employer supplied OneDrive for Business folder. I have now copied everything over (drag-and-drop) and it is syncing. Unfortunately, I get the error that OD4B does not like the file name "Default%20Settings" in the folder "PortableApps/KittyPortable/Data/Sessions". I assume the problem is the % in the name.
Has anyone run into file naming limitations for any cloud storage installations of Portable Apps? Is there any work around? Is there a reason Kitty stores names with "url encoding" when spaces are legal?
Any other suggestions?

Additional Directory for Keeping Apps
Hello,
Does Portable Apps Platform, scan additional directory / directories for other portable apps?
I have a few non open source apps like CCleanerPortable, etc. These apps are not updated by the portable apps updater and I have to manually update them from time to time. Some apps like WSCCPortable update them selves from the app itself. And some tools are single exe like Microsoft Spy++, WiFi2Hotspot, WMI Explorer etc.
I would like to keep them in separate directories for maintenance purposes.
PortableApps = All Apps that are updated by the platform
MyApps = Portable Apps that I have to update myself e.g. MyApps\CCleanerPortable
MyTools = Single EXE Files in their own directories e.g. MyTools\WiFi2Hotspot
The single exe file when kept inside the folder and copied to PortableApps\ It is recognized and shows up in the menu properly and can be run by clicking on the name.
Does it support or Is it possible for incorporating multiple folder scans.
Best regards,
Devang Bhatt

Installer deleting "desktop.ini" file
I'm using folder customization for faster folder visual location, so I dedicate "appicon.ico" to be folder icon for every "AppNamePortable" folder.
In that folder windows creates "desktop.ini" file with "hidden" and "system" attributes, but it is deleted by installer whenever I update application.
It is not deleted if in "installer.ini" is statement:
[FilesToPreserve]
File1=desktop.ini
But then I have to make my own installer for every update of every application and could not use update from platform.
Could it be possible, in some next release, to default installer not to delete files in "AppNamePortable" folder (I could not find any environment variable substitution for that folder).
Another problem is that missing environment variable named like ALLUSERDOCUMENS which would act like ALLUSERSAPPDATA but for Documents:
In Windows XP and 2000 it would be e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
and in Vista, 7, 8, 10 it would be e.g. C:\Users\Public\Documents
Some programs are using that folders to put there data which are available for all users, and I could not find way to backup/restore those folders.
Any solution or suggestion would be appreciated.

AppList for server & client
Hello!
Could you please make application lists for server and client in this way:
1) Server have a list of application with all needed information about them
2) Client have it's own list of application from last synchronization with server
3) Client have his unique list of installed applications
4) Client loads newer list of applications, or uses the old one - from last synchronization
5) Client compares both his lists to know what he can update or install
I think it will make client a bit more comfortable to use. And client will have no need to ask about each app, as I think he does now.
Thank you!

Folder/Directory organization
Hello,
I have a few apps that I use in the portableapps platform so that I have a common launcher for the apps. Because these apps were not installed via portableapps platform and they my own apps, I have stored it all under a folder.
After doing that I am no longer able to find the launchers on portableapp list neither it returns any search results.
So if I have a folder "App1" and "App2" at the root (PortableApps) directory, I am able to search and find the launcher via the portableapp.com platform, but if I move these 2 folders under a "myapps" folder (e.g. PortableApps\myapps\App1 it stops being searchable.
Is this working per design or this is something that could be customized?
