UPDATING: Platform vs Custom Location ???

Hello Members:

I am new to PortableApps.com.

I want to make sure I understand the UPDATE / UPGRADE info provided at: https://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#using

Upgrading a Portable App

PortableApps.com Platform Updater (Recommended) - To upgrade your apps using the platform's built-in updater, just select Help and then Check for Updates. The platform will inform you what apps are out of date and offer to automatically download and install the updated versions.

PortableApps.com Platform Manual - To upgrade a portable app from the PortableApps.com Platform manually, first, make sure the app isn't open. Then, click Apps and then Install a New App. In the window that comes up, click the Install button. Then, browse to the AppNamePortable_x.x.paf.exe file you downloaded and select it. Now, follow the on-screen prompts if there are any. The Platform takes care of letting the installer know where to install to. All of your current settings and data will be preserved.

Standalone - To upgrade a portable app manually without the PortableApps.com Platform, just browse to the location of the AppNamePortable_x.x.paf.exe file you downloaded. Double-click the file to start the installation. Follow the on-screen prompts and select the location you'd like to install to. For upgrades, you should select the parent directory of the AppNamePortable directory in which the app is currently installed. For example, if the app is within X:\PortableApps\AppNamePortable, you'd want to select the X:\PortableApps directory in the Browse Folder window. After clicking OK, it should show X:\PortableApps\AppNamePortable. All of your current settings and data will be preserved.

QUESTION

- Does UPDATING require the PA Platform... or can portable apps located in other folders also be UPDATED manually or automatically?

- What are the UPDATING consequences of using the PA Platform for downloads... and then moving the downloaded FOLDER to another disk location?

- Are there any VIDEOS that clearly explain the above?

Some Way To Uninstall PA Plugins?

Is there some way to uninstall unwanted Portable Apps plugins, like the GNUPG plugin (v2.26?) in the most recent update?

I can look through the entire PA menu system and not find a single reference to PA plugins. That's where I would normally look to find some PA apps that I want to remove.

I looked through the PA folder structure on my SSD and did not see any obvious indications of te PA GNUPG plugin being installed anywhere. I did not do any "file by file" searching; Windows isn't exactly friendly like Unix or Linux when that needs to be done.

I looked over the "sticky" on the PA Menu Bug & Feature Tracker using the Ctrl-F ("Find") feature in Firefox and searching for the word "plug" or "plugin". Nope, nothing found.

So, where does PA install it's GNUPG plugin, just in case I want to "nuke it" from my system? Why can't we uninstall it if we want?

Issue: new platform install overwrites data in \portableapps folder

Setup: Win7x32, Platform version: 14.4.3

Background: was having an issue with the Start.exe process so I tried re-downloading the platform installer. There were a lot of programs under the
\PortableApps folder.

Steps:

1. Download the program and launch
2. Save to external drive (in this case J:\)

Defect: contents of Portable apps subfolder J:\PortableApps were deleted

Expected results: a prompt to ask about removal of folder contents.

I had recent a backup so I didn't lose anything, just wanted to make you aware.

Uninstall consistently fails

It seems that whenever I try to uninstall an app it fails. There is not much to say except that when uninstall is selected it spends a little bit of time spinning its' wheels and then displays a dialogue box that says "Unable to uninstall appname" where appname corresponds to the name of the portableapp for which uninstall was selected.

I installed a new setup for v15 and this is the error I'm getting at startup and the app then closes.

Exception EGestureException in module PortableAppsPlatform.exe at 0024EEEA.
Unable to enable or disable IRealTimeStylus: The parameter is incorrect.

Error on new install or upgrade for v15

... error I'm getting at startup and the app then closes. Exception EGestureException in module PortableAppsPlatform.exe at 0024EEEA. Unable to enable or disable IRealTimeStylus: the Parameter is incorrect.

I am using Windows 7 and have tested it on a TB and a 2TB harddisk.

Any ideas?

i just gut the update from 14.4.? (i do not remember 14.4.2 or 14.4.3) to 15.0 stable. after restarting portableapps i get the error message below. i have no clue where to dig in. all fixes published here for this problem do not apply. tls 1.1 and 1.2 are enabled on my system.

temporarely disabling windows firewall does not have any effect.

i am on windows 10 x64 build 17666. everything worked fine before updating to 15.0. installation of a freshly downloaded 15.0 over existing installation did not work out either.

thanks for this jewel piece of software. can´t wait to see it working again Smile

PA Platform v15 Has An Interesting Feature

Why does Portable Apps Platform V15 insist on loading the Windows (Windows 7 Pro x64 in my case) "Pen and Touch Input Component" when no such physical support exists on my laptop?

How do I know? I can see it "plain as daylight" in Windows Task Manager: "wisptis.exe 2520K" (was 2502K and as high as 2536K).

I would think the programmers of the really slick Platform can enhance the "options" feature with a way to disable loading that "Pen & Touch" aspect of the platform, you know, like a checkbox or something.

Not having the ability to tell Platform "do not load it" leads to delays in starting up Platform on an older slower machine like mine. I use Portable Apps because I have an older slower Windows machine and PA Apps seem to perform better than "native apps" on my machine.

How do I know there is a delay? I click on the Desktop icon for Portable Apps Platform while watching Windows Task Manager. During the Platform startup process I can see "wisptis.exe" get loaded, then "dumped", and then loaded again. I finally see Platform appear on the Desktop after all of that messing about for features (Pen and Touch) I do not have.

Interesting side effect of using Windows Task Manager to kill off "wisptis.exe" at some point before you shutdown the PA Platform program you get an error box that says:

"Exception EGestureException in module PortableAppsPlatform.exe at 0024EEEA. Unable to enable or disable IRealTimeStylus: The RPC server is unavailable."

This behavior by Portable Apps Platform simply adds more "cruft" that I want to keep off my system.

[BUG] Platform updater doesn't close platform before upgrade.

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1709
Path: %user%\OneDrive
Ver: 15.0 -> 15.0.1 -> 15.0.2
Not triggered any AV or FW. (COMODO - CIS)

It causes some file has been deleted before closing the platform and make it can't be closed by common methods.

Updater does not respond to "Windows Shutdown"

System: Windows 7 64

Scenario:

There should exist at least one app ready for update
- Start Apps/CheckForUpdate
- Accept update
- Wait till the end

Big Notification dialog box appears, containing Close button. Do not close

Initiate Windows Shutdown process

Updater prevents windows shutdown

Expected: I expect, that updater window should close - there is nothing to do, allowing windows to shutdown

%Temp partitition/folder is not ready

Requirements:
- Windows 7 64
- Fast filesystem (I'm using Samsung Evo 960 PCIe drive)
- Start,exe located on fast filesystem
- user is automatically logging in after system startup
- shortcut to start.exe is added to startup folder: C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
- I'm using RamDisk: ImsDisk or SoftPerfect. Unfotunatelly - it is not a service, but program executed from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run
- RamDisk automatically mounts RAM drive, let's say T: and then creates T:\Temp folder
- Env vars %Temp and %Tmp both point to T:\Temp

Scenario:
System starts, user logs in, Start.exe is executed while T: partition is not ready yet or Folder %Tmp does not exist yet

PortableApps platform displays error messages (it depends):

Using ImsDisk - a bit slower startup:
Error 1050 (I'm not sure if I remember the number correctly) - error reading parttion
alternatively: Error 78

Using SoftPerfect 3.5.8 - a bit faster:
"Folder pointed by %Tmp does not exist"

Solution: It was enough to delay start of PortableApps platform for 1 second.

PA.com won't run after file transfer

I recently transferred all of my Portable Apps from one USB drive to another. Since then, the PortableApps.com platform won't work. All of my other apps will, but the app launcher itself won't. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, ejecting and re-inserting drive, but nothing seems to help. I'm not seeing an error message anywhere, it just won't start up. I've been running Portable Apps for years and have transferred files this way before, and have never run into this problem. I'm not sure where to look next to troubleshoot. Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

Outdated Firefox icons in app store and second profile

I've noticed that all the Firefox icons in the installer pop-up menu are outdated ones, and that the 2nd profile for Mozilla Firefox's icons also do not match the current Quantum icons. I am thinking that this is because of older versions, but most of all the Beta and Developer edition icons are bugging me.

Need Portable Photoshop

Hi i'm new to this forum. I've just started graphics designing online and i'm using Photoshop 7.0 (I bought it 1 year ago). Now i want to get some latest version of Photoshop. Someone suggests me in the previous post to buy Photoshop CS6 portable but that is too expensive. I cannot afford buying that. I just searched it for free and got it. You can also check this software for better understanding my question. link to illegal build removed - mod GC
Now i'm confused that is it legal or not? or it may harm my PC?
Please comment your honest answers that should I install it or not. I'm waiting for answers.
